Marmaris Castle Museum

Marmaris Castle Museum, Marmaris Kalesi
Turkey, Marmaris
The fortress was built in 3000 BC. Ionians, then Marmaris was still called Fiskos. According to historians, it was with the construction of a fortress in the center of the peninsula on a hill, from where an overview of the bay is possible, that the development of the ancient city of Fiskos began. The fortress was often rebuilt. The last reconstruction of the fortress was carried out in 1522 under the leadership of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent after his successful occupation of Rhodes. The main decorations of the fortress were the tower, powerful battlements and cannons that guarded the bay and the city. Some of the cannons have survived to this day.
Trying to recreate the former grandeur of the fortress as much as possible, restoration work began in 1979. By decision of the Ministry of Culture, the fortress was converted into a museum. The inner courtyard has been turned into a garden, which is decorated with bright flowers and ancient inscriptions with sculptures. There are fragments of marble bas-reliefs near the entrance. Most of the 7 galleries of the museum are used as exhibition halls for artists and sculptors in Turkey. In addition to regular exhibitions, the museum-fortress often hosts cultural and artistic events. Here they conduct lessons on the history of the region for schoolchildren.

Greetings, dear readers of my review! In October 2021, I was lucky enough to go on vacation to Turkey, to the city of Marmaris. And one of the must-see places is, in my opinion, the castle of Marmaris. This fortress was built almost 500 years ago (in 1522) by order of Sultan Suleiman, on the site of an ancient Greek fortress, which at that time had long been destroyed. The castle itself resembles a fort and is quite small in size. During the First World War, the French fleet fired on the fortress and partially destroyed it, but about 30 years ago, Marmaris Castle was restored, and a wonderful museum with ancient Greek exhibits was opened inside.

For me, this is the perfect attraction - a mixture of history, seascapes, a beautiful garden and a fresh breeze! I couldn't leave here - beautiful views and interesting expositions (antiques and coins, sculptures) - everything that school textbooks do not give! But it's so interesting to see coins - the size of the nail of the little finger to the palm of your hand. From different metals. Or vessels for perfume and hairpins. And what curious figures (apparently for mysteries). And what inscriptions on tombstones! And the garden itself! And although the fortress itself has been heavily restored (which can already be considered a remake), I enjoyed it a lot! I advise! Please note that finding the entrance is not easy: these are the narrowest and crooked streets (very picturesque), which you won’t even think of! The locals will advise! And it is important - the ticket costs 8 lire from the nose! It is in lira - dollars are not accepted.

It was a whole quest to find the entrance) It is located on the side of the market. And the castle itself is in the port area. I liked it very much, it seems that you are not in Turkey, but somewhere in Spain. Everything is like a toy, cinematic. Amazing experience!

Do not pass / drive by, the tour is really interesting. In addition to beautiful views, it can be very informative, especially for those who are at least a little interested in history. The castle is small, but full of all sorts of exhibits. The price corresponds to the pleasure, even underestimated, and the time was not wasted. It's very quiet, comfortable and clean.
