Church of St. Irene

Hagia Irene, Aya İrini
Turkey, Istanbul
Hagia Irene is located near Topkapı Palace. It was built at the beginning of the VI century. The church is the only authentic Byzantine temple in the city: after the city was conquered by the Ottomans, it was not converted into a mosque, but was used as a warehouse. Today, the Church of St. Irene serves as a concert hall, music festivals are held here.

It is said to be the only Christian church in Istanbul that has not been converted into a mosque. Moreover, the church is almost 2 thousand years old, like the famous Hagia Sophia. Now there is a concert hall inside, and the entrance costs 30 lira, as in a full-fledged museum.
