seaweed farm

seaweed farm
Tanzania, Zanzibar_city
The seaweed farm is located in the east of Zanzibar in the village of Paje. There are several such farms in Zanzibar, but only this one is open to tourists. Here you can see how African ladies plant and collect seaweed at low tide, feel the local flavor. There is a special exhibition hall on the territory of the farm, where you can see how algae are dried and crushed, what products are made from them. Everyone can take part in the process of planting algae (seaweed), as well as independently try to prepare from it, for example, a body scrub or other products. Farm workers will help you with this.

I must say right away that to visit the farm it is advisable to take comfortable shoes with you, in which you can go into the water, and an umbrella (the tour is quite long, takes place in the open). The tour is a walk to the ocean where, at low tide, African women plant seaweed while singing songs. Algae in small bundles are "wound" on ropes and, at low tide, they are attached with wooden pegs to the bottom of the ocean. They are left there for 3 weeks. During this time, the algae grow significantly, after which they are "collected" and dried in the sun.
