Chernihiv Collegium

Chernihiv Collegium
Ukraine, Chernigiv
The Chernihiv Collegium is one of the first higher schools in the Left-Bank Ukraine, founded in 1700 with donations from Hetman Ivan Mazepa. The collegium building has a rectangular shape, over which a bell tower was added in 1702. The facade of the church is decorated with pilasters, columns and niches. Grammar, syntax, the theory of oratory and the theory of poetry were taught here in Latin and Polish. Now the Chernihiv Collegium is part of the National Architectural and Historical Reserve "Chernihiv Old".

According to our guide, what we see now is half of the Collegium, the second wing and other buildings have not been preserved. Allegedly, when they dug the foundation, they found a huge silver idol. It was melted down into a gate for the church. I can hardly imagine a gate made of silver. Unfortunately, history is silent about the further fate of the gate.
