Holy Dormition Elets Monastery was founded in 1060 by Chernihiv Prince Svyatoslav Yaroslavych (fourth son of Yaroslav the Wise). According to various sources, between the second half of the XI century. and the second half of the XII century. built the main building of the monastery - the Assumption Cathedral. This temple has undergone a number of reconstructions throughout its centuries-old history, but still has survived to this day, almost retaining its original forms. The main highlight of the cathedral are several ancient frescoes from the times of Kievan Rus.

The Assumption Cathedral is the only surviving monastery building from the times of Russia. In the thickness of the Yelets mountain, on which the monastery stands, there is a whole complex of caves. It is believed that they were created during the princely era, but unlike the neighboring Anthony's Caves, they are almost unexplored.

In 1239, during the Mongol-Tatar invasion, the monastery was destroyed. After that, he repeatedly experienced a lot of destruction, fires, declines and recovery.
In Soviet times, the monastery was closed and only in 1992 was transferred to the religious community. Now there is a nunnery.

In 1669, Ioaniki Galyatovsky became the abbot of the Yelets Monastery. It was during his time that the buildings that formed the modern ensemble of the monastery were built: the bell tower, the northern cells, the eastern cells, the south-western cells, the wall around the monastery, the Peter and Paul Church.

In 1688 the monastery was headed by Theodosius of Uglich (Chernihiv), who was later canonized. His house we can see near the bell tower. At the end of the 17th century, the tomb of Chernihiv Colonel Yakov Lyzohub was added to the Assumption Cathedral. Also on the territory of the monastery is the ruined house of the abbot of the XVIII century.

Today Yelets Monastery is an important tourist attraction and a monument of Chernihiv, it is very cozy, quiet and beautiful.
It is hoped that the ancient caves of the monastery will soon be explored and restored, and later opened to visitors from all over the world.
