Black Grave, Black Grave
Ukraine, Chernigiv
The Black Grave mound is located in the city center near Yelets Monastery. It is part of the National Architectural and Historical Preserve "Ancient Chernihiv". The barrow, 11 meters high and 40 meters in diameter, has a circumference of 125 meters; it was probably created in the 10th century. Here was found a burial of that time, tools, household items, swords, as well as Byzantine coins.

"Black Grave" - a mound of ancient Russian (Varangian) origin of the late tenth century in Chernihiv. Local legends attributed it to Prince Black, the legendary founder of Chernihiv. It is part of the Chernihiv Ancient State Historical and Architectural Reserve. Excavated in 1872-1873 by D. Ya. Samokvasov. Remains of a large fire on which the corpses of two soldiers were burned (according to scientists, a father and son were buried in the mound), as well as probably male and female slaves, were found under the embankment; tools and women's jewelry were found in the mound.

It is believed that Chernihiv began from this place. You will see a large hill (mound) with an obelisk, which indicates that this is the Black Grave. On the way to Boldina (oak) mountain, this is a "significant" place where you can take pictures, and that's it.

There are many burial mounds in Chernihiv, but Black Grave is one of the most important. There is absolutely nothing to see there. And, if it were not for the Yelets Monastery nearby, then one would not even have to go in this direction. But it is very interesting to listen or read about the burial, about the funeral ceremony and feast. Like pharaohs, princes in pagan times were buried with their wife and retinue. In this case, there is also a son in the grave. However, perhaps he died in battle, and not "at the same time" .
