Last year I had a chance to visit a very interesting city in Western Ukraine, which tourists often unfairly bypass - Drohobych. There are many interesting places here - the Town Hall, cathedrals, etc. But the old wooden church of St. George made the greatest impression on me.
It was built in the 15th century and acquired its final form in 1678. It is famous for its unique interior paintings and no less unique iconostasis of the middle of the 17th century. This is a wooden three-parted (trisrubnaya) church in plan with a square main navoi and two faceted side wings (conchs). Interestingly, it was originally built not in Drohobych, but was transported in 1656 from the village. Nadievo and installed on the site of its burned-out predecessor.
The bottom of the church is framed by a wide girdle in the form of an arcade-gallery on pillars. Above the Babinets there are choirs with an arch-gallery and the Vvedensky chapel.
Above the main log cabins, the church is crowned with three tops without creases, and the wings are crowned with small tops with one crease, all on eight-sided pedestals.
The interior of the church is painted with frescoes, made under the direction of Stefan the painter popovich Meditsky. In addition to religious compositions (The Passion of Christ), a rich decorative ornament of a predominantly vegetative nature. The iconostasis and icons of the same painter ("Akaphaestus of the Mother of God", "Acts of the Apostle Paul", "Cutting off the head of the Great Martyr Yuri") in brown-ocher and olive-green tones; with the help of modest artistic possibilities, the artist gave an individual, almost portrait expression to the figures he depicted. The relief of the carving of the vine on the columns of the iconostasis is similar to the carving on the stone.
In 1678, the bell tower of the church of St.
Jura, which was repeatedly repaired, but it has not lost its original appearance and until that time is one of the best preserved monuments of Galician architecture of the 17th century.
