Biryuchy Island is the southern continuation of the Fedotova Spit, forming with it the Utlyuk Estuary in the western part of the Sea of Azov. Until 1929, the island belonging to the Kherson region was separated from the northern part of the Fedotova Spit by a narrow strait, which is now gone, but the name "island" remained. The length of the island is about 20 km, the maximum width is 5 km. A wooden lighthouse was built on the southwestern end of the spit in 1878, later replaced by a brick one.
The economic zone of the Azov-Sivash National Natural Park is located on the territory of the spit. More than 1,000 deer and 2,500 fallow deer, 120 Turkmen wild asses, hares and pheasants, foxes and raccoon dogs live on 290 hectares of the island. Biryuchy Island can be visited as part of an excursion, with a pass.

Best Safari in Ukraine!

The island is absolutely not wild and not empty. During the week we managed to visit both the western (from Genichesk) and the eastern (from Fedotova Spit) sides of the island. It must be admitted that it was much more interesting from the east side, because it was possible to take part in a safari due to the fact that the "island" is connected to the spit and you can drive into it by car. The only, but big, disadvantage of the entrance from the east is the road traveled by graders, which makes the journey somewhat unpleasant.→

Lost Paradise in the Sea of Azov

Spit Biryuchy Island is a kind of "Noah's Ark" for rare species of animals, lost in the Sea of Azov. Frightened birds are circling over the shore, the air is clean and pristine, reeking only of sea salt and steppe forbs. You seem to be transported to another world, where there is little reminiscent of civilization and man in general.→
