Catherine's Cathedral

Catherine's Cathedral
Ukraine, Kherson
St. Catherine's Cathedral in the style of Russian classicism - the first stone temple of Kherson - one of the main attractions of the city. The cathedral, designed by architect I.E. Starov, was erected on the territory of Kherson Fortress in 1781-1786 under the leadership of Prince Potemkin in honor of the saint, whose name was Empress Catherine II. The Empress visited Catherine's Cathedral during a trip to the south of the Russian Empire in 1787. Prince G.A. Potemkin himself, who died in Iasi on October 5, 1791, was embalmed and buried in the Catherine's Cathedral, his marble tombstone is located above a hidden crypt, in the middle of the temple. In 1922 the church was looted and closed in 1930. The building first housed a museum of atheism, then a warehouse. On August 25, 1991, Catherine's Cathedral was returned to the Orthodox Church.
