There are several versions regarding the construction of the fortress. It is most likely that in 1386 the castle was built by Prince Fyodor Ostrozhsky. According to another version, the fortress was built by Dmitry Olgerdovich, who is considered the founder of the Koretsky family. Whatever it was, but it is known that in the 16th century, Prince Bogush Koretsky built a stone fortress on the site of the previous wooden fortification.
The Koretskys owned the city until 1651, after which it, together with the castle, passed into the possession of the Czartoryski family. In 1780, Jozef Klement Czartoryski rebuilt the castle into a palace, the entrance to the territory of which was crowned with a high gate tower.
After the death of Jozef Klement Czartoryski in 1810, practically no one else lived in the castle-palace, and in 1832 the residence burned down, and has not been restored since then, except for an unsuccessful restoration attempt in 1990.
