Just yesterday, my long-awaited trip to Stone Village took place. And even during the flowering of delicious fragrant azaleas!
This is a very interesting place in the Zhytomyr region: plain Polissya, pine, birch, ferns, blueberries, and suddenly, in the middle of all this, huge stone boulders appear, the size of a small house, covered with various mosses and overgrown with grass and strawberries. There are a lot of boulders in the middle of the forest, but they are located quite compactly, besides, you don’t need to wander for hours in search: they lie not very far from residential buildings.
Today, this state geological reserve "Stone Village" is located on the territory of the Polessky Reserve, in the Zamyslovichsky forestry, 30 km northeast of the regional center Olevsk, not far from the village. Rudnya-Zamyslovetskaya. Probably, the boulders were brought by a glacier, after which they underwent weathering. There are several folk legends about the origin of "Stone Village".
Our group was told about legends, scientific hypotheses, the history of the region and much more by as many as three guides who not only conduct excursions, but also study their region and customs. They publish books, write articles for the press, take photographs and organize local history expeditions. These people are really interesting to spend time with.
I managed to see the city of Olevsk, the city is very old, but, unfortunately, it is difficult to see this antiquity: almost nothing remains of the old buildings, only the church, which was put in order in our time and does not smell of antiquity. But beautiful!
There is also an ancient settlement, archaeologists work on it, by the way, they live side by side, in a neighboring house. The ancient settlement is not an interesting place for everyone, as it looks like an ordinary artificial hill, there is nothing to do there without a specialist's story. We had one, but, to be honest, I listened to everything.
After Olevsk, we set off on a dirt road to Kamennoye Selo, inspecting the swampy forest along the way. Almost immediately, yellow bushes began to catch my eye! This is the same Pontic azalea for which I went on this trip! Recently, I have been more of a summer resident than a tourist, and just a fan of agriculture and floriculture, especially beautiful plants of natural flora. Therefore, I have been waiting for this tour dedicated to the flowering of the azalea for a long time.
In Ukraine, there are almost no rhododendrons (deciduous rhododendrons are called azaleas) in nature. In the Carpathians there is a lot of mountain low rhododendron, in some places there is in the east of Ukraine, also a small creeping one. And here in Polissya, in the Olevsky district, the Pontic azalea grows. It forms thickets, grows in tall bushes up to 2m, blooms profusely and smells awesome! It must be seen and smelled!
On the way to Kamennoye Selo, azaleas are the sea, and among the boulders its bushes are also found.
The Stone Village itself is a very picturesque and pleasant place. A very unusual picture of a round huge stone in a flat forest. It is a must to see this! Moreover, the trip is quite realistic to carry out in one day from Kyiv. Although it will take this whole day, from early morning, almost night, until late evening, almost night, but already the next day.
Separately, I want to tell you about the organizer of the trip - Yaroslav Kozak (google it, he has a website and a blog). Today, it is he who organizes very original, difficult to implement on their own and very picturesque trips. This is not a tour to Pochaiv or Hoverla, which is offered at every turn. These are such places, often forgotten by God, where you can not believe your eyes. Often these are eco-tours to nature reserves, sanctuaries. Sometimes tours are timed to the flowering of some beautiful or rare plants - snowdrops, azaleas, irises, orchids of the middle lane. Naturally, mountains.
This is not the first time I have traveled with Yaroslav, so I highly recommend it for real lovers of outdoor recreation and local history lovers. This is not even a travel agency, but a club of interests.
Photos will tell more words, and I have them)
And another moment. Our group was more than 30 people, including children. There are no people in most of my photos! This is a big plus of this place: you can spend time here both noisily with everyone and in solitude.
But this barrel of honey has its own fly in the ointment.
Everything seems to be simple: not far from Kyiv, beauty, nature, forest. But do not rush to rejoice! Roads in our country in general, and in the wild swampy places of northern Polissya in particular, to put it mildly, are not of the best quality. And if in a simple way: after the city of Olevsk, almost off-road awaits you, especially in bad weather with precipitation. The road to several villages, through which the path to Kamennoye Selo lies, is a wide rolled / rammed dirt road.
In principle, a travel card for passenger cars, if the weather is perfect)
Also, these places are at the center of the latest "amber" scandals and showdowns. And although this situation has almost been sorted out - now there are not thousands of amber diggers here, but who knows how the situation will develop further. The amber has remained...For a tourist, in principle, this is not so important, but the prospectors pretty much littered their former "tent camps" with household waste (bottles, bags, packages). Fortunately, there are few places like this along the way.
The village from Olevsk is on the edge of civilization, so the maximum that there is from services is a store, a well, a shop. There are no hotels, no pharmacy, public transport - don't even try. The phone works, I don't know about the Internet.
That's all in a nutshell, but if you have any questions feel free to ask. When I come back from the garden, I will definitely answer.
I tried to tell everything honestly, as it is. The place is cool!
