Basilian Monastery of St. Onuphrius

Basilian Monastery of Saint Onuphrius in Dobromil
Ukraine, Lviv
The Basilian Monastery of St. Onuphrius in Dobromila was founded in 1613 by the owner of these places, John Felix Herburt, whose castle was located nearby. The first monks of this monastery were Fr. Anastasy and Fr. Iol. They built a small church here, which stood for more than two hundred years, however, in 1818, during a strong storm, it was destroyed. In 1723, the stone church of St. Onufry was built, in 1731, a two-story monastery building was erected next to the church, and in 175 a bell tower was built. In the monastery of St. Onuphry, novices went through a "probationary period" before they were "taken tonsure," i.e. become monks and go to other monasteries. From 1886 to 1905, the relics of the Holy Martyr Pasiv, sent here by Pope Leo XIII, were kept in the monastery. During these years, the monastery was a place of pilgrimage for many Basilians.

It was in the Dobromilsky Monastery of St. Onuphrius, in 1888, that Roman Sheptytsky, the future His Eminence Andrei, Metropolitan of Galicia, began his spiritual path.
In 1905, during the period of the Polish occupation, the Basilians were forced to leave the monastery. During the First World War, the monastery was badly damaged. The restoration of the monastery began in 1928. The monastery operated after the annexation of Western Ukraine to the USSR, and during the period of German occupation. After the end of World War II, in the summer of 1945, the monastery was closed. The monks were arrested by the NKVD and sent to camps. In 1950, a psycho-neurological boarding school for women was placed in the monastery. Until now, next to the monastery, there is an abandoned cemetery where the patients of the boarding school were buried. Not far from it is the old monastery cemetery.

In 1992, the premises of the monastery were returned to their owners - the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. From that moment on, life in the monastery resumed. Restoration work has begun and is still ongoing.
