Castle in Stary Selo

Old Village Castle
Ukraine, Lviv
18 km from Lviv, on the territory of the Pustomitovsky district, there is a settlement, the antiquity of which is indicated by its very name - Staroe Selo. And it is famous for its pentagonal castle, by the way, the largest in the Lviv region.

The castle was erected by Prince Vladislav Dominik Ostrozhsky in 1642 (according to other sources: in 1654). The castle was built of stone and brick. During its construction, a mixture of lime, milk and egg yolk was used as a binding solution. Such a solution gave unprecedented strength to the walls. Eloquent confirmation of this is the fact that in 1654 the troops of Bohdan Khmelnitsky did not dare to storm the castle, which gave the impression of an impregnable citadel.

The Turks, who did not dare to storm the castle in 1672, had a similar opinion. Then, approaching the walls of the castle, they turned back, after the defenders of the fortress killed the Turkish commander with a well-aimed shot.
The castle really gives the impression of an impregnable stronghold. Its walls, 8 meters high and 2 meters thick, and fourteen-meter-high towers terrified the enemy. The castle was surrounded by a moat, over which a drawbridge was thrown. Along the perimeter of the walls there was a defensive gallery for the castle garrison. On the territory there was a chapel, a palace and outbuildings.

In the middle of the 18th century, Staroe Selo, together with the castle, passed into the possession of the Polish magnates Czartoryski. They lived in their estates far from the Old Village and were not at all interested in the fate of the castle. It was from this moment that the mighty fortress fell into decay.

In 1809, Isabella Czartoryska gave the castle to her grandchildren, the Polish magnates Potocki. They were also not interested in the fate of the fortress and it continued to collapse. The last owner of the castle, until September 1939, was Alfred Pototsky.
Since 1970, attempts have been made to restore the castle, but they have not been completed. Several times, various costume festivals and knightly tournaments were held on the territory of the castle. The dilapidated stage still stands in the yard to this day. And around the ruins, garbage and desolation. The castle continues to die...
