The Nikolaev Regional Museum of Local Lore was founded in 1803 and is one of the oldest museums in the country. The museum was opened by order of the Commander-in-Chief of the Black Sea Fleet, Marquis de Traverse, after the finds in the excavations of the ancient city. In 1838, a pavilion was built for the museum at the expense of the Admiralty. At the end of 1913, by decision of the Nikolaev City Duma, the Nikolaev Natural History Museum was opened, which since 1920 has become a historical and archaeological museum. During the occupation of 1941-1944, the museum was almost completely destroyed, but, thanks to the dedication of the people of Nikolaev and the help of the country's museums, in 1950 it was restored and celebrated its opening as the Regional Museum of Local Lore.

In view of the growing collection, since 2012 the museum has been housed in the Old Fleet Barracks, a monument of national importance. The museum has collected over 160,000 exhibits, including antiquities from Olbia, labor tools of Kievan Rus, weapons of the Cossacks, exhibits that tell about the customs and culture of more than 50 peoples inhabiting the Nikolaev region and much more.

Worth visiting
