Regional Landscape Park Granite-Steppe Buzhye

Regional Landscape Park Granite-Steppe Pobuzhie, Bug Gard
Ukraine, Mykolaiv
The granite-steppe Bug region is one of the oldest land areas in Eurasia, which has not been submerged into the sea depths for 60 million years and played the role of one of the centers of speciation in the Black Sea region. The park is located on the southern edge of the Ukrainian crystalline shield, within the spurs of the Podolsk and Dnieper uplands. On the territory of the park, the Southern Bug crashes into the crystalline array of the Ukrainian Shield, as a result of which many rapids appeared on the river. Outcrops of granites are visible on the rocky shores.

The granite-steppe Bug region is a remnant of a spur of ancient mountains that once stretched for 1000 km northwest to southeast from the Slovechansko-Ovruch ridge to the Azov Upland. As a result of denudation processes, only the bases, represented by solid crystalline rocks, remained from the mountains. Over the past 60 million years, this piece of land has not been flooded.
For almost 40 km, the Southern Bug flows here in steep rocky banks, forming a narrow canyon-like valley with majestic granite rocks, rapids, waterfalls and islands. The granite-steppe Bug region is a real mountainous country among the Ukrainian steppe. The park is located on a geologically very old part of the earth's surface. The local flora includes about 900 species of vascular plants, 27 of them are listed in the Red Book of Ukraine, four - in the European Red List. Due to the continuous plowing of land for most animal species, the canyon has become the last refuge. There are no poisonous reptiles in the park.

The relief of the territory is valley-beam. Chernozem soils are the most common, occupying 95% of the territory. The near-river part of the Southern Bug valley and the islands are occupied in places by floodplain forests and meadows, on the slopes of river valleys and gullies, areas of petrophytic (stony) steppe and the remains of forb-grass and shrub steppes have been preserved.
The granite-steppe Bug region has a very great historical and cultural value. On the territory of the landscape park, in the valley of the Southern Bug between the villages of Migiya and Aleksandrovka, almost 100 archaeological sites were found, which represent a continuous chronological series from the Paleolithic (dated 30,000 years BC) to the time of the formation of the Slavic ethnos. Of particular interest are the remains of burials of different peoples - Cimmerians, Trypillians, Sarmatians, ancient Slavs, Romans.
The well-known tract Buzhsky Gard is located on the territory of the park - the remains of the settlement of the Cossacks. The territory of the park is closely connected with the history of the last secular knightly order in Europe - the Zaporizhzhya Grassroots Troops and its state - the Zaporizhzhya Sich. Near the confluence of Tashlyk with the Bug, on the island, there was Gard - the administrative center of the Bugo-Gardova palanka, the largest in size among the eight territorial units of the Zaporizhzhya Republic. No less famous in those days was the Protich tract with the Cossack shrine of the Protich rock. The rapids that have survived to our time on the Southern Bug are locally called broyaks.

One of the best natural water slalom tracks in Europe is located in the Protich tract. The sheer cliffs of the canyon are a favorite place for competitions of rock climbers.
