Rivne Regional Ukrainian Music and Drama Theater was founded in 1939. The beginning of the creative life of the theater was marked by the play "Yarov's Love" by K. Trenev.
At the beginning of the war in June 1941, the theater ceased operations. Most of the actors were forced to leave the city, some were shot by the Nazis, and some, under the direction of director Anatoly Demo-Dovgopolsky, worked in a drama theater created by the German authorities. After the arrest and execution of A. Demo-Dovhopilsky, the theater fell into disrepair. The last performance of the war years, "Nazar Stodolya" by T. Shevchenko, took place on January 31.1944.

In June 1944, the theater resumed its work. Actors from the Melitopol Drama Theater, evacuated from the city of Ufa, are involved in the creative strengthening of the troupe. The new theatrical season opened on May 1.1945. For 15 years, the theater has been working in an adapted building of the House of Culture of Builders, often touring.
Immortal images of the great Shakespearean tragedy "King Lear" came to life for the first time on the Ukrainian stage in Rivne.
In 1960 the Rivne theater moved to a newly built building. The team is replenished with young energetic graduates of theater universities, who formed the basis of the troupe. Among them are Anatoliy Gavryushenko, Nina Nikolaeva, Volodymyr Snizhny (now People's Artists of Ukraine), Lina Izarova (Honored Artist of Ukraine) and others.
Leading directors of the Ukrainian scene Volodymyr Hrypych, Ihor Rybchynskyi, Anatoliy Horchynskyi, Vitaliy Tolok, Yaroslav Babiy, Volodymyr Opanasenko, Yaroslav Malanchuk, Oleh Mosiychuk and others join the productions at different times. It is thanks to such bright personalities that the team wins recognition and success.
Since 1978, after the fire, the theater has been working in the House of Culture of Builders, while touring from Rivne to Krasnoyarsk, Novosibirsk, Murmansk and Petrozavodsk, Brest, Stavropol… In 1983, on the occasion of the 700th anniversary of Rivne, the theater returned to the rebuilt premises. In 1997 a new bright page in the history of Rivne Regional Drama Theater begins. The team is headed by Vladimir Petrov. At this time a new repertoire is being formed, the theater invites leading stage masters, directors and scenographers to stage. An interesting creative experiment in 2003 was the staging of J. Ivashkevych's Summer in Noah (a love story by Georges Sand and Frederic Chopin) by Polish theater and film director Bohdan Poremba and set designer Jerzy Skzepinski from Warsaw.
For the first time in the history of the Ukrainian scene in Rivne there is an open-air theater.
To create it, the courtyard of the theater is used, where a portable stage, a hall with 256 seats, sound and lighting equipment have been built. The musical comedy "Cuckold based on Shakespeare's play" Windsor Jokers "was chosen for the production. The author of the idea and project manager is Volodymyr Petrov. Directed by Miroslav Grinishin.
