Transfiguration Cathedral

Spaso-Preobrazhensky Cathedral
Ukraine, Sumy
The Transfiguration Cathedral is an Orthodox cathedral on the central pedestrian street of Sum, built in an architectural style that combines elements of the Renaissance, Baroque and Classicism. The stone church was founded in July 1776 and consecrated in October 1788. The stone baroque bell tower, 56 meters high, with chimes on all sides, was erected in 1801. After a major reconstruction in 1882-1892, the temple became a three-altar one. At the corners of the dome there are four-meter cast-iron sculptures of the apostles Peter and Paul, two figures of St. Vladimir the Great, and on the bell tower there are three-meter cast-iron sculptures of the evangelists Luke, Mark, John and Matthew.
In the interior there is an iconostasis made of white marble and Ural malachite, paintings on biblical themes by the famous artist V.E. Makovsky. The main shrines are the miraculous icons of Our Lady of Tikhvin and the Mother of God of Korsun, the icon of the Apostle First Martyr Archdeacon Stefan with a particle of his relics.

A two-tiered cathedral was erected in the city center, on the site of a wooden church. The first architect who designed the temple is unknown. From 1882 to 1892, under the leadership of Mikhail Lovtsov, a major reconstruction of the church was carried out. At the same time, a 56-meter bell tower was completed to the cathedral, on which chimes brought from England were installed. Sumy merchants Nikolai and Dmitry Sukhanov were patrons of the restoration work. Rumors, gossip and tragedy. The icon of the Mother of God of Korsun or Shpilevskaya (as it was called by the people) was the patroness of Sumy and was in the Transfiguration Cathedral for almost three hundred years.
