Holy Dormition Cave Monastery
Crimea, Bakhchysarai
The Assumption Christian Monastery is one of the oldest in the Crimea. However, there is no exact data on the time of its occurrence. Most scientists believe that it was supposedly founded at the end of the 8th - beginning of the 9th century, when icon worshipers appeared in the Crimea - monks and laity, who fled here from the persecution of the Byzantine iconoclasts after the Church Council of 754. Here they settled in the mountains, creating cave monasteries, one of which was the Holy Dormition. After the capture of the peninsula by the Golden Horde, many monasteries ceased to exist. Assumption has been preserved since the 15th century. became the center of Orthodoxy in the Crimea.
It existed until 1778, when the bulk of the Christian population was resettled from the Crimea to the Sea of Azov by the Russian government and the monastery was empty. Since 1850, a gradual revival of the Crimean Christian monasteries began; after the restoration, the Orthodox Assumption Skete was also opened. During the Crimean War, it housed a hospital, in the old monastery cemetery there are burial places of the participants of the Sevastopol defense who died here. The Assumption Skete of Bakhchisaray was gradually rebuilt, and by the beginning of the 20th century. was already a significant complex, consisting of five churches, chapels and many monastic buildings. However, in 1921 the monastery was closed by the Bolsheviks, again gradually fell into complete desolation, began to collapse. In recent years, the main church of the monastery in the name of the Assumption of the Virgin was partially restored, and in 1993 a monastery was opened here. Few monastic buildings have survived to this day.
