Church of Saint Elijah

Temple of St. Elijah, Temple of St. Elijah the Prophet
Crimea, Yevpatoria
Temple of St. Elijah - a Greek church, consecrated in the name of the holy prophet Elijah, is located on the very embankment of Evpatoria; according to pre-revolutionary concepts, a new part of the city began to the west of it. Belongs to the Simferopol and Crimean diocese of the Moscow Patriarchate.

The temple was built in 1911-1918. city architect A. L. Heinrich. In contrast to the intricate St. Nicholas Cathedral, the Greek church looks rather stern: smooth darkish walls made of sawn stone, large laconic details of the design of the facades. In plan, the temple is traditionally cruciform, oriented to the cardinal points. Above the entrance is a belfry, the building is topped with a single dome on a faceted drum.

To the left of the entrance there is a commemorative plaque with the text: “Priest Martyr Eleazar (Spiridonov) of Evpatoria is glorified in the guise of saints of the Cathedral of New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia of the 20th century. He worked as the first rector of St. Elijah's Church in 1919-1936.
The Church of St. Elijah, along with the Juma-Jami Mosque and the Nicholas Cathedral, is one of the three most significant architectural dominants of the city, their domes are an integral and most expressive part of the view of Yevpatoria from the sea.

Passing by, you can hear the very gentle sounds of the church choir. A very beautiful temple, as if taken somewhere in Greece and moved here, the picture is very unusual. Inside there is a vault painted, there is a cozy square with benches, where a weary traveler can sit down and relax.

Calm quiet place. The temple is located right by the sea, next to the temple there is a small courtyard. I didn’t really like the fact that after the restoration the temple was finished with modern plaster, which is very down to earth.
