Massandra Palace

Palace of Alexander III
Crimea, Yalta
In Upper Massandra, there is one of the best architectural monuments of the southern coast of Crimea, the palace of Emperor Alexander III. It was built on the slopes of a mountain range, in a secluded place surrounded by forest.

The history of the palace is interesting. It began to be built in 1881 by order of the governor's heir, Prince S.M. Vorontsov, but a year later the prince died. In 1889, the Massandra estate of the Vorontsovs, together with the unfinished palace, was bought for Emperor Alexander III. Three years later, the construction of the palace was completed, but Alexander III did not have to live in it either: in 1894 he died in Small Livadia.

In Soviet times, this beautiful architectural monument was a closed "object" for many years. In the royal palace, which became the state dacha, the leaders of the party and government of the former USSR stopped to rest.

Currently, the palace is the object of tours.

One of the most beautiful palaces in Crimea. Entrance to the territory is free, inside is paid. A very beautiful garden. Definitely to visit. It needs to be seen.

We visited the palace at the end of August. Oddly enough, the queue to get inside was long, there were many groups with guides, there were not so many independent visitors who were going to get inside. The palace inside is not as beautiful as Vorontsovsky. Near the palace there is a large wasteland with grass, they could put it in order, but so far there is just grass. By the way, we didn’t manage to find the way to the palace the first time, where the map shows the turn from the highway to the palace there is a “brick” sign and you can’t go there from that side, we made our way through some narrow broken road that goes above the highway, and then according to the map, it didn’t work out either, they asked the locals how to get to the palace and finally drove to it.

We were in September, during the velvet season. We got from Yalta on our own, without sightseeing tours, by minibus only 5 km, then we had to walk from the Massandra stop, but for those who like to enjoy walking and the surrounding views, a great option to visit this attraction . . The Massandra Palace is surrounded by a park of 41 hectares, very cozy place for walking.

My favorite Palace in Crimea. It is not as big as Vorontsovsky and Livadia, but no less interesting for that. For me, it is somehow homely, cozy, and even groups of tourists do not violate this atmosphere. The Palace was conceived as a hunting residence, so accommodation was not provided here. It is better to get there by car, although there are problems with parking. In addition, you can’t drive up to the Palace itself - you still have to walk the last hundreds of meters through the forest and up the hill.
