Salt Mine Museum
Carpathians, Solotvyno
The Museum of the History of Salt Mines is located near the Solotvyno mine, one of the largest in Europe, and tells about the origin and development of salt mines in Transcarpathia. Permanent salt mining in Solotvyno began in the second half of the 18th century; under Austria-Hungary, eight salt mines were already operating here. Near the one-story building of the museum there is a huge funnel, at the bottom of which salt deposits are visible, the thickness of the layer of industrial production of which reaches 300 meters. The museum presents tools, clothes, personal belongings of salt miners, lanterns and lamps, various engineering devices, documents, maps and photographs. The museum can be visited by reservation.
