Vatican City State, Stato della Città del Vaticano
Vatican, Vatican
The Vatican is the smallest state in the world with an area of 0.44 sq. km.
The independent city-state was founded under the Lateran Agreement between the Italian state and the Roman Catholic Church in 1929. It is located on the right bank of the Tiber in the western part of Rome.
The name of the city-state comes from the name of the hill on which it is located - Vaticanus. The territory of the Vatican is surrounded by medieval walls around the perimeter. On the territory itself are the Vatican Gardens, Apostolic Palace, Vatican Museums, including < a href="/places/it/rim/Vatikanskaja_pinakoteka-s801/"> Vatican Pinakothek and the famous Sistine Chapel.
Formally, the border with Italy passes through St. Peter's Square.
St. Peter's Cathedral is a unique renaissance monument in the Square.
The Pope governs the Vatican and the entire Catholic Church. Currently, this is Pope Francis - the 266th pope. He is the head of the church and the heir of St. Peter.
The state is guarded by the Swiss Guard, founded in 1506. The Papal Firearmie performs only police functions and is not part of the armed forces.
There are no airports in the Vatican, but there is one heliport, there is also a 700-meter railway line and a train station.

Usually all trips to Rome include a visit to the Vatican and its famous sights. It doesn't matter if you're on tour or traveling alone. This small city-state is home to a rich history, legacy and influence. In ancient times, the Vatican was outside of Rome, because there were numerous swamps in this place. By order of the emperor Caligula, the swamps were drained, and a huge hippodrome was built in their place, and then a circus was erected, in which, according to legend, the apostle Peter was executed.
