We are planning to go to Phuket. Is Malaysia worth visiting? or is it the same

we are planning a trip to Phuket, Thailand for 10 days. group of friends. eat with wives and bachelors. So I think maybe for one with his wife he travels to Kualo Lumpur. maybe the islands in Malaysia or somewhere else to go for 2-3 days. and then join the others in Phuket. advise plz. costly?
