First, a few words about Tenerife in general and Puerto de la Cruz in particular.

An island of volcanic origin, the Teide volcano last erupted in 1909, before that - in the early 1700s. Accordingly, most of the landscapes are lunar, most of the beaches are rocky or rocky. The greenery is missing. The exception is the very north of the island, where the mountains are not bald, but overgrown with trees, shrubs, etc. The climate of the north and south is radically different. The south is hot, but there are good gently sloping sandy beaches separated from the ocean by breakwaters, the north is cool, green, the climate is simply excellent. But the problem is with swimming.

We decided to live in the north and rent a car to travel around the island, including to the beaches. When choosing between a hotel and apartments, the hotel won because of the excellent location and the presence of air conditioning in the room. Well, I was too lazy to cook and clean on vacation, to be honest : ).

Do not believe those who sing the song "why is there air conditioning in Tenerife, it's not hot there, especially after sunset. " This may be true for the winter months, but not for August. Yes, in Puerto it's always a little overcast in the afternoon, even if it was sunny in the morning, but this does not negate the need to wear sunscreen, nor the fact that the buildings are heated and the rooms are hot.

In terms of price / reviews, we chose the Catalonia Las Vegas 4 * hotel, which belongs to the Catalonia hotel chain. The 12-storey concrete building stands right on the city's waterfront, in front of the exit from it, on the one hand, there is a bus stop, a taxi and a free train to Loro Parque, on the other hand, the box office of the Martianes complex and the pools themselves are a two-minute walk away. Cafes and shops lined the waterfront on both sides. Resting in this place is mainly Spaniards of retirement age, noisy, active. They have dancing, karaoke, and dinner continues in these cafes until midnight.
This is where the sea view rooms come out. We asked for a room in the other direction, it turned out to be the Teide View classification. Indeed, every morning we had, perhaps, the best view of the volcano from our balcony.

Tourists should pay attention to the following point. The hotel has an ordinary standard room by default without a balcony and without a view, our MOT did not indicate this anywhere. For a balcony overlooking the pool, plus 10 euros per day, with a balcony and sea views - plus 15 euros per day, superior sea view - plus 30 euros per day surcharges, superior with a sea view balcony - plus 40. services that are not available in ordinary rooms: a free safe (in ordinary rooms for a fee), bathrobes and slippers, tea and coffee, welcome sweets and water. I can’t say what the state of the superior rooms themselves is, we lived in the usual one with a balcony. We had new beds with new mattresses, a modern TV and freshly renovated room. Then everything gets worse: there was no repair in the bathroom for 30 years.
It is clean and everything works, but outwardly the condition is dead, which is unpleasant. In addition to the bath, washbasin and toilet, the bathroom has a bidet.

The air conditioner in the room is very ancient, the block from it was on our own balcony, roared and shuddered. We found a positive moment in this - behind the roar you could not hear the disco under the windows, and it was convenient to dry towels and swimwear with a powerful jet of warm air. Upon arrival, we did not find the remote control for the air conditioner, to which the cute uncle not the reception explained to us that they did not have a remote control, but a switch. Yes, we found the switch button in the middle of the wall under the air conditioner, only two functions were available - turn it on / off. It was impossible to change the temperature, direction or intensity of the air flow. The HVAC specialists were obviously having a sense of humor there, since a fan was also stuck to the ceiling, the switch from which was located on the wall opposite from the air conditioner.
We did not understand the idea right away, but it turned out that the air flow from the air conditioner blows directly onto the fan. And now, if you turn it on too! ! ! then a pleasant coolness is dispersed throughout the room.

They clean very cleanly, they are there with good skills, since most tourists, coming from the beaches, carry a fair amount of sand of all colors into the room. Tipping was either taken or not. One of the maids was with a clear hello. During her first shift, we lost discount coupons in Loro Park, which are distributed to everyone free of charge at the airport. On her second shift, someone else's used shower cap ended up on a hook in the bathroom, and the tube of my toothpaste was smeared with something that I can't even identify. I had to throw out the pasta, and on my aunt's next shift, ask them not to clean it, but only to change the towels. Under my supervision : ).

It's good that there were a lot of maids and they changed all the time.

The restaurant in the hotel is considered good.
It seems that it is - all products are fresh, the menu is more or less varied. But the food is tasteless. Before the trip, I read several reviews where tourists wrote that in Tenerife they don’t know how to cook either meat or fish, that the restaurant of the Catalonia Hotel is full of everything, but eat without pleasure. I then thought that it was strange, and apparently, people just have some special taste. But now I completely agree with these reviews. I can't even explain what it is. The fish only swam in the morning, and now it lies on your plate, but it was cooked by some miracle tasteless.

This applies not only to the hotel restaurant. We had HB, we went to dine in different restaurants, by enumeration we found one where it was more or less edible. In the rest, some nonsense was going on.

The hotel does not have parking. The nearest place where you can always park without any problems is the port, about 10 minutes on foot.

The territory is small.

It simply does not exist on the facade, on the reverse side there is a recreation area with a swimming pool, sun loungers and a lifeguard. In the morning there are various activities in the pool, such as aqua aerobics.

There is no bell fight, all guests move their own suitcases.

The elevators are very old, no ventilation, hot and stuffy.

What to say. . this is all of the above - this is not the worst choice in Puerto de la Cruz : ). The problem is that the hotels are old and it's not vintage : ) but "hello 80s" without renovation. There are more expensive and better ones - these are H10, Bahia and Vallemar. But in its price category, Catalonia Las Vegas has no alternative. All disadvantages can be considered minor if the location of the hotel, safe food and not the worst service are important. Service is good everywhere from the reception to the restaurant.

In general, we are unlikely to return to Tenerife, the natural beauties did not really strike us, and a beach holiday cannot be compared with Greece, Turkey and even continental Spain.
