TRAVEL NOTES ABOUT THE TRIP TO THE ISLAND OF CRETE

Travel notes about a trip to the island of Crete. Asterion Beach Hotel, Chania, Pyrgos, Platanias

- I will celebrate my thirtieth birthday in Greece on the island of Crete. The ticket was chosen almost spontaneously. I watched some programs about Greece…. But I can't fall in love with her! ! !

- Do you like musicals? Watch the American "Mama Mia" and you will definitely fall in love with Greece!

Then I watched it 10 times, I love this crazy romantic story with ABBA songs. But I truly fell in love with the Greek islands, color and already dreamed of feeling this world of freedom, love, rocks, flowers and the sea; gain strength in orthodox temples and dance in local taverns. And I got it in full : ).

I will keep my travel notes about the trip to Crete according to the following plan:

- Reviews Hotel Asterion Beach 5 stars, Crete

- Cities of Chania, Platanias

- Nightlife in Platanias: discos, taverns

- On your way to the Gonia Monastery in Kalimvari (Moni Gonia Monastery)

- One day bus-ship trip to Gramvousa Castle and Balos Lagoon

So part 1 - Reviews Asterion Beach Hotel 5 stars, Crete.

Visas to Greece from Ukraine in May:

I went on a trip with a faithful friend - for several years now in May we have been flying to celebrate my DR - so far familyless energetic Ukrainians.

We got a Greek visa for a long time and made us worry. We ended up on the Ukrainian May holidays, and embassies, as it turned out, also like to relax. Passports with visas were given to us already before the flight, and we found out that they were ready 2 days before departure, and I was already at my own peril and risk pulling the suitcase on the train to Kyiv. For those who prefer May for travel, for your information - the tour was bought on April 3, the documents were submitted to the agency on April 8, on May 13 we were confirmed visas. They say it's normal practice to report the sighting 5 days before departure - trust God and don't be nervous, but pack your bags!

A visa to Greece in 2013 costs 35 Euros, and this amount must be put in an envelope with documents, and I spent the whole day looking for small Euros in the city's banks and local money changers.

On the way to Asterion Beach Hotel & Suites

The hotel was chosen in the western (greenest) part of Crete with the wonderful name Asterion Beach Hotel 5 * (Asterion Beach Hotel five stars Crete).

By the way, when we googled - we came across a lot of similar names both in Crete and Cyprus - many people want good luck under the name of the god Zeus, the king of Crete. From the photo, the hotel seemed nice and romantic to us.

The 5-star Asterion hotel we need is located near the city of Chania, 14 km from which there is Chania International Airport. But since May is considered off-season in Greece and all charters are not flying yet, we arrived at the Airport of the capital Crete - Heraklion International Airport, which is on the other side of the island.

However, we really liked the transfer - about 3 hours in a comfortable bus, along a completely flat road, immersed in flowering bushes; mountains on the left, azure sea on the right… it was 3 hours of slow introduction to the new reality.

There is another option to get from east to west of Crete - without waiting for the bus, rent a car right at the airport at a price of about 150 Euro for 7 days (the more days, the cheaper). It is even cheaper than then renting transport in Chania (Chany) or Platanias (Platania). Together with the car, you will be given a map of the island - the road is very clear, almost always over the coast of the Cretan Sea, briefly driving into the mountainous part of the island.

And I’ll make a reservation right away - we really regretted that we didn’t rent a car, being afraid that with little driving experience we wouldn’t be able to cope with it.

We did not see everything that we could, because by buses you will not get to all the places rich in sights and beauty of the island. Soon I want to purposefully return to Crete to visit all those places that I learned about, but which I did not get to.

Reviews about the territory of the hotel Asterion Beach Hotel 5 * Crete (Asterion Hotel Crete):

Under the Nickelback hit at the reception, we were met by Russian-speaking Yura, who answered all our questions with joy and calmness:

- I didn’t advise you to change the number - you don’t need to overpay, they gave us apartment No. 111 on the 1st floor with access to the patio.

- sauna, drinks, kitchenette in each room - paid. Even very decently paid ....For example, if you want a kettle - 6 euros per day, if you turn on the frying pan and electric stove - 12 euros. We didn't need it all.

Such mini jacuzzis are available in 50% of the ground floor rooms with garden view. No. 111 does not have it, but we did not understand why ....

perhaps in the summer, in the heat, inactive hotel guests soak there at night, because during the day it is so hot that you want to run away with an umbrella by the sea, where the wind blows : ).

Yura is a master of all trades - he is a masseur in the spa, and a bathhouse attendant, and he will bring suitcases to the room on a golden cart, and check the plumbing, he sold us a lighter in the hotel mini-market, etc. The hotel is small, family-type and there is not much staff here. The hostess of the hotel herself was seen more than once fussing around the household. worries - a very nice lady.

The rooms are excellent, standard - no complaints. Towels are changed and cleaned - EVERY day! Moreover, the staff is so principled that not a single euro of gratitude has ever been taken from the bedside table! So they stayed there when we vacated the room! Happens….

Lots of flowers, cozy little hotel.

Breakfast-Dinner (HB at Asterion)

The food is quite varied, there were sea reptiles, the meat is always very tasty, fruits in a common basket, olives, goat cheese, some of the desserts ....The waiters kindly offer something to drink - the prices are naturally overpriced even compared to city taverns. Info for our brother - it is forbidden to bring drinks to the restaurant with you.

Tea and coffee are served only for breakfast! For dinner - everything is for a fee, including water.

We were here from 16 to 23 May and always in any weather, whether by the pool or on the beach, we were practically alone. Those people whom we did occasionally see at the hotel were clearly pensioners and a couple of families. Mostly from Germany, France, very few Russian-speaking people. The peace and quiet on the territory did not bother us - we needed the hotel purely for relaxation by the pool and the sea, to sleep for a few hours and eat.

The rest we found plenty in the cities and leaving for heavenly places nearby - this will be written later. No animation. After dinner - everyone to sleep (except us, of course). Judging by the number of rental cars, bicycles and bikes in the hotel parking lot, we assume that the hotel guests traveled around the island every day - therefore they seemed invisible to us. Some prefer to take only breakfast, so as not to become attached to the room where you spend the night at all.

But we didn't have a car. And for those like us - more about the possibilities of movement around the area.

Bus transportation from hotels located in the area of Pyrgos beach:

To get to the road where the stop is - leave the hotel and go up the road (around the reeds, at the only villa on the way the black dog always barks - hello to him). At night, the road is not lit, take a flashlight or a mobile phone and do not be afraid of anything!

If you go not upstairs but to the left, you will have a pleasant walk around the village, there are markets, hotels, a couple of taverns, lemon thickets and flowers, and anyway, sooner or later, go out onto the big road.

This is what the bus stop sign looks like! Even if it is at the turn of the road - be sure - the bus will stop here.

Fully green buses - intercity. White-green - internal.

We leave to the road: on the bus to the left you can go to Platanias (1.6 Euro), Chania (2.50 Euro) (until 23:00). To the right - to the monastery and to Gramvousa (4.50 Euro) (1 time per day - see Gramvousa and Balos lagoon for more details).

Taxi is an expensive pleasure, for example - a taxi in Platanias (5 min. drive) - 8-10 Euro.

Asterion Beach Hotel & Suites is located in the Pyrgos Psilonerou area. The bus stop is also called - you just need to say to the bus conductor - "P`irgos, Asterion Beach, plizzzz. "

Buses are incredibly comfortable (excellent music - from life versions of concerts to hits of all times and peoples, air conditioning, running boards and seat belts, an English-speaking controller in each), go about every half hour.
