The first 4 days were a bit shocked by the country, the exotics and the mentality of the people. Therefore, I recommend taking a tour for at least 11 days. The beginning of the holiday is to adapt after a very long and tiring journey and understanding "what for". Then we felt like tourists there and just enjoyed the rest. Yes, people are really very responsive and simple, at first glance they respond with a smile. But be very careful that at every step you will be deceived and under the pretext of demanding money.
If you are going to the city, outside the hotel you will be tied to either a driver here and there, or just a gentleman-guide, who will pass your will and desire on the way to take you on a tour, take him to the shops and shops where he has to roll back, and then demand money for it, even if you were just going to go for a walk in the city and did not agree on any excursion in advance. If you refuse to give money, a bad mood is guaranteed. So be careful with strangers who are imposed on you along the way. They have an interest. After such a not very pleasant experience, my husband and I did not want to stay for the rest of the holiday. But in the morning, when you go out to the ocean, its waves and power simply fascinate you and all the negativity has evaporated. The second half of the holiday was great!
We did not succumb to the provocation of a local beggar and we were very lucky to meet our compatriots from a nearby hotel. They were going on a tour of Kandy, found a good guide with recommendations and reviews and invited us to go on a tour together. We, of course, after some experience of excursions "on the road", without much enthusiasm, but agreed. And thanks to this guide, the audible days of our vacation began. The guide's name was Khasi. Very cool guy. We agreed on a good price with him (we clarified earlier, it is profitable for him) and he himself speaks Russian fluently, as he studied in Kyiv for 3 years. He loves our winter very much and knows how to cook Ukrainian borsch. He gave us a wonderful excursion to the city of Kandy, where he told a lot of interesting facts about the Buddha's tooth and the history of Buddhism. On the way to Kandy we visited tea plantations and a tea factory. It was also very interesting.

And on pineapple and rubber plantations.
Hassi sincerely wanted us to be happy, we stayed that way. I did not think that so much could depend on the guide. We were good friends. After the tour, he and his brother drove us to the city more than once and helped with shopping. We said we needed it, they drove where the prices were really good. We compared with previous ones that we saw and were satisfied. And today we communicate in social. networks. The next time we go to Sri Lanka, we will stop in Khasi. He is now finishing his mini-hotel with several rooms right on the ocean and a cafe where he will cook Ukrainian borsch))). This is not a guide advertisement, I have no interest in it, when I read the reviews of tourists about the guides, it's honest, a little annoying. But only after meeting the dubious beggars, who from time to time divorce you for money, I realized that we were very lucky to meet a guy like Hassi.

As for the hotel itself, the old but clean, well-kept and beautiful area around. The choice of hotel was not regretted. A solid four for such a poor country. Well, the ocean is something you can really fly soooooo far and endure small inconveniences or go through some negative experiences. It was worth it. In general, we were satisfied. In the end it was a pity to go, I did not want to. We will definitely be back again.
