We were going to Egypt in Safaga to ride windsurfing. We ended up in Sri Lanka in KalUtara. Early March 2011.

Impressions and reviews are positive, even very. But this is from the country itself, its inhabitants and attractions. A lot of people traveled independently to nearby cities. By bus and train. Tours are not purchased.

Someone once said

Kalutara is a resort famous for its numerous sports clubs, excellent spices, in addition, it is the largest center of the rubber industry in the country and the ancient center of the spice trade. First it belonged to the Portuguese, then to the Dutch and the British.
…. .
Outdoor enthusiasts in Kalutara will be able to go in for water skiing, windsurfing, scuba diving and hunting, sailing. It is possible to take a boat trip along the Kalu Ganga river.

The above applies to Hikkaduwa, Bentota and Negombo.
Well, or to the province of Kalutara, to which Bentota belongs.

They also write that there is a rubber production in Kalutara. I expected natural rubber shoes and authentic condoms for souvenirs at least on every corner. It turned out that Kalutara is the capital of the province of Kalutara, and rubber is not harvested on the coast, but where it goes is not clear at all.

As for water sports...

You can swim in the waves of the surf. As soon as you go waist-deep, the rescuers will begin to whistle and return back. It's just not possible to swim.
You can buy a badi surf board for $20 (or take it from the locals) and ride the waves.
Before that, there will be a conversation with rescuers like I'm a "man" I can swim dont worri tuu mach. And there will be happiness. Well, or misfortune if you lied ...because the flag is most often red (the hotel does not recommend swimming)
The coast is sandy, the first 5 meters, a sharp depth of 1 meter.
5 with a lateral flow (this is where I stop), further 50 meters knee-deep, waist-deep, depending on the size of the waves. further, where the waves begin to break somewhere up to the neck, there is no current, funnels may appear. There were a couple of incidents during the week (see above about assessing one's own strengths)

When the yellow and red flag is hung out, the waves subside, the bdisurfing ends. Swimming in knee-deep depth is not fun. You can again jump over the waves or try to swim in the wave

Conditions for windsurfing in Kalutara are 3 out of 10. A month before the trip, I started looking for information on the Internet

There is no rental in Kalutara! ! ! You can only ride in waves. You can bring your own equipment. Storage, rinse - dry the sail there are no conditions. You can negotiate with the locals, they are very communicative and want to make money on everything, I think they would even open rentals if there was a demand. So far, lobsters and shrimp in mattress toppers are in the greatest demand. .

Representatives from all coastal establishments are present on the beach and you won't have to look for them for a long time, they will come themselves : )) Most importantly, the wind. During the stay, it was blowing in the afternoon before a thunderstorm. Feels like a 7-8 sail. Flags fluttered in the wind but did not flutter, palm trees did not bend down from the wind. It is necessary to look at wind statistics by months. More often there was a wind along the coast or from the sea.

One day we went to Bentota. We found the Sunshine Water Sports Center, which turned out to be not at all in bentota, but a 5-minute walk from the Aluthgama bus station. There is no equipment, the choice is limited. Mostly great boards for beginners. can be compared with a hotel rental somewhere in Sharm El Sheikh. You can ride in the mouth of the river or in the ocean in the waves. On the river, buildings standing on a cape create a wind shadow and areas where at least somehow it doesn’t blow so much. We rode on the Bentota River for an hour and went to the spit to the ocean.
After lunch (as we later understood in Lanka, this is a system), it began to rain, and the wind swelled in front of it. For about half an hour there were 2 kites and one sail in the waves.

On the spit we found another Confifi Marina club (LSR Lanka Water Sports network) the choice is also very limited, but the equipment itself is newer.

I highly recommend buying/downloading the Lonely Planet guide
In Sri Lanka (available on torrents) and drive more on your own. Learn and see much more. At the same time break the stamp about stupid tourists. The people are very friendly and always helpful.
