Byzantine forum and rotunda in Durrës

Forumi Bizantin, Ancient Forum
Albania, Durres
The Byzantine Forum and Rotunda are the most popular attractions in the ancient city of Deurres. They were built around the 5th century AD by the Byzantines. The forum hosted city meetings, major transactions, important government decisions were made. The forum was framed by various state institutions, among which was the rotunda. During its long history, Durres has repeatedly passed from hand to hand of the occupiers, more than once a warrior has suffered destruction in time. Numerous sights of the city were partially or completely destroyed. This account did not pass the forum and the rotunda. Until our times, only a few columns remained from them.

In the courtyards of Durres, the remains of the Byzantine forum of a round shape, surrounded by columns - the Rotunda, unexpectedly settled down. Previously, it was covered with marble slabs. In the middle, there was supposedly a statue of the emperor. Now the building looks extremely strange against the background of modern houses
