Tsitsernakaberd

Tsitsernakaberd Memorial Complex, Armenian Genocide Museum, Genocide Victims Monument, Tsitsernakaberd Memorial
Armenia, Yerevan
The Tsitsernakaberd memorial complex, built in 1967, is dedicated to the memory of the victims of the Armenian Genocide carried out by Ottoman Turkey in 1915. The monument was erected over the gorge of the Hrazdan River on the Tsitsernakaberd hill, which means "fortress of swallows".
The monument consists of a high pillar 44 m high, with twelve lower slabs arranged in a circle. The tall tapering pillar represents the national revival of the Armenians. And the twelve lower swaying pillars represent the twelve Armenian provinces that are today in Turkey. An eternal flame burns inside the circle.
There is a version that the monument symbolizes two parts of Armenia: Eastern and Western. Some argue that the monument represents Mount Ararat - Big and Small, which are also on the territory of modern Turkey.
The Museum of the Genocide was built on the territory of the Memorial Park, where historical documents, photographs and films are kept, revealing the history of the preparation and implementation of the Armenian Genocide by the ruling circles of Turkey. It also presents materials from various international organizations, state bodies that condemned the genocide.
Since 1967, every year on April 24, thousands of people visit the memorial complex to lay flowers at the eternal flame in memory of the victims of the genocide. Their number is growing every year.

A special place in Yerevan is Tsitsernakaberd Hill, where the Memorial Complex in Memory of the Victims of the Genocide is located. The memorial is dedicated to the memory of 1.5 million Armenians killed during the genocide in the first half of the 20th century by the Ottoman Empire. The history of the founding of this Memorial is interesting. Under Soviet rule, everything related to national ideology was absolutely unacceptable and forbidden, and commemoration of the victims of the genocide was also impossible.
