Matenadaran them. Mesrop Mashtots

Museum of Ancient Manuscripts - Matenadaran, Institute of Ancient Manuscripts, Matenadaran - The Museum of Ancient Manuscripts
Armenia, Yerevan
The word "matenadaran" in ancient Armenian means "book depository". The Matenadaran Institute is the world's largest repository of ancient manuscripts, which was created on the basis of the collection of manuscripts of the Etchmiadzin Monastery. Already in 1892, there were a little more than 3100 manuscripts in the monastery book depository, and by the end of 1913 there were already 4060 copies.
The Matenadaran building, which is located in the center of Yerevan, was opened on March 1, 1959, and was designed by the architect Mark Grigoryan. The building itself is made in the spirit of the traditions of national architecture of the XII-XIII centuries. A monument to Mesrop Mashtots, the creator of the Armenian alphabet, as well as other prominent thinkers of ancient Armenia, was erected in front of the building.
In 1984, the first volume of the catalog of the Matenadaran collection was published. The collection is constantly replenished, especially by representatives of the Armenian diaspora living in America, Europe and other countries of the world.
This pride of Armenian culture has more than 17 thousand ancient manuscripts, as well as more than 100 thousand ancient archival documents. Along with Armenian manuscripts, there are more than 2,000 manuscripts written in Hebrew and Russian, Arabic and Latin, Greek, Japanese and other languages.
Matenadaran is of particular importance as a research center where scientists study the history and culture of ancient countries, as well as an art museum, which presents a unique collection of book painting and those types of arts and crafts that are associated with the art of a handwritten book: fabric samples, embossing on leather and jewelry.

Matenadaran bears the name of the creator of the Armenian alphabet - Mesrop Mashtots. He created the Armenian alphabet in 405 and translated the Bible into Armenian. This is one of the must visit sights of Yerevan. The Matenadaran Museum is one of the world's largest repositories of ancient manuscripts, an unimaginably rare treasure, thanks to its collection and the unique activities that it carries out. There are manuscripts of the 5th-18th centuries and collections of early printed and early printed Armenian books dating from the 16th-18th centuries.
