Sevanavank

Sevanavank Monastery, Mariamashen
Armenia, Sevan
Sevanavank Monastery is located on the Sevan Peninsula, which was once an island, at an altitude of about 1900 meters above sea level.
The monastery was founded in 305 by several monks led by Gregory the Illuminator. Surb Harutyun and Surb Karapet churches were the first to be built on the site of pagan sanctuaries.
The construction of two more churches was initiated by Princess Mariam, daughter of King Ashot I. These are the temple of Surb Astvatsatsin (Virgin Mary) and the temple of Surb Arakelots (12 apostles).
In the following centuries, the monastery was destroyed many times: there were attacks by Arabs and Mongols, and it also suffered from an earthquake in 1936. In Soviet times, the monastery was closed, and the temple of Surb Astvatsatsin (IX century) was dismantled so thoroughly that not a single stone remained of it. A sanatorium was built from its stones. And from the temple of Surb Harutyun, only the foundation remained.
Now on the territory of the monastery you can see two temples - this is the church of Surb Arakelots, the dome of which is slightly sharper than that of the neighboring church of Surb Karapet. Both temples are built of dark volcanic stone. A little to the west of the temple of St. Arakelots there were once cells and the Academy, but only ruins remained of them.
Sevanavank is smaller and more modest than other monastic complexes; it does not surprise with its rich architecture. But, despite this, the monastery attracts with its bewitching views of Lake Sevan and the surrounding mountains. These views make it the most unusual in Northern Armenia and the most attractive.

The monastery is sometimes called Mariamashen, in honor of Princess Mariam, who initiated the construction of two churches (St. Astavtsatsin and St. Arakelots). Sevanavank has a large collection of khachkars and their fragments, many of which are displayed right at the entrance to the church. The most interesting of them are those made of green stone (limestone or andesite) mined in the Sevan region. Sevanavank is located about 1 hour from Yerevan in a northeasterly direction. You need to go along the M-4 highway to the peninsula, and then follow the signs to the car park, and climb the steps to the complex.
