Etchmiadzin Cathedral

Etchmiadzin Monastery, St. Echmiadzin Cathedral, Holy Etchmiadzin
Armenia, Vagharshapat
Etchmiadzin Cathedral is one of the first ancient temples in Armenia in the entire Christian world. Its construction began in the 4th century under the leadership of Gregory the Illuminator, the first Armenian Catholicos, who brought Christianity to Armenia.
The monastery complex is located in the city of Vagharshapat, Armavir region, and includes the Cathedral, the Theological Academy, a refectory, a hotel, the residence of the Catholicos, a museum and a stone reservoir.
Initially, the cathedral had the shape of a basilica, the walls were covered with colorful frescoes, but over time, its appearance has changed, and now it is a cross-domed temple with three altars: the central one is made of marble, and two side ones - north and south.
The relics of many saints, as well as shrines, are kept in Holy Etchmiadzin. Every year, hundreds of thousands of tourists from all over the world flock here to see these and other relics and treasures.
Since 2000, the monastery has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
