Bell ringing area

Glockenspielplatz, Glockenspielplatz, Fliegenplatz, Fliegenplatz
Austria, Graz
The Glockenspielplatz, or bell ringing square, is known for the fact that every day at 11, 15 and 18 o'clock in one of the old buildings two sash windows open, and two rotating wooden figures of a boy and a girl appear to different melodies of bell ringing.

Until the beginning of the 20th century, the area was called Fliegenplatz. The name Glockenspielplatz appeared thanks to the wine merchant Gottfried Maurer, who bought buildings here for a wine shop, as well as his own house, in which he brought and installed bells.

Glockenspielplatz is a small square located inside the quarter, surrounded by houses of various styles and eras. If you are lucky enough to be here at 11.15 or 18 o'clock, you will be able to watch how two window sashes open in the pediment of a building of a very respectable age and, together with the bell ringing, two dancing figures appear - a boy and a girl in the national clothes of Styria. This couple has been on the scene for over a hundred years!
