The Viennese Plague Column is located in the historic center of the city and it is impossible to miss walking here. Erected in 1693 to commemorate the victory over the plague, the column is not original in its idea, as similar pillars were built throughout Europe. However, this is not devoid of the originality inherent in the Austrian capital.
The monument is built in the classical Baroque style. Many marble figures of Saints and angels almost completely obscure the pillar itself and surround it with a cloud of statues. The pillar is located on a three-sided marble pedestal and is surrounded by a marble balustrade. Bronze bas-reliefs and plaques are built into the pedestal, as well as a large amount of gilding. The construction of the column began after the strongest epidemic, which killed a third of the city's population. Since the construction of the monument lasted for many years, many changes were made to the project, and the column itself received a completely new and unusual interpretation.
On the pedestal, bowing before the powers of heaven, prays the Emperor Leopold I.
