plague column

Plague pillar, Holy Trinity Column, Pestsaeule
Austria, Vienna
The Plague Column can be found on Graben Street near St. Peter's Church. It took 10 years to build and was completed in 1693. The monument is dedicated to the Holy Trinity in honor of the deliverance of the capital of Austria from the plague, which wiped out almost a third of its population. The marble composition, decorated with gilding, is a fine example of the late Baroque.

The Viennese Plague Column is located in the historic center of the city and it is impossible to miss walking here. Erected in 1693 to commemorate the victory over the plague, the column is not original in its idea, as similar pillars were built throughout Europe. However, this is not devoid of the originality inherent in the Austrian capital. The monument is built in the classical Baroque style. Many marble figures of Saints and angels almost completely obscure the pillar itself and surround it with a cloud of statues.
