In 1589, the city council handed over to the local Franciscan monks the ruins of the burned monastery of St. Jerome, which was founded in 1383-1387 at the cemetery. The Franciscans restored the church in the Renaissance style with Gothic elements. Construction work was carried out from 1603 to 1611, but was mostly completed in 1607. Interior design lasted until 1720.
The church is not too big - 65 by 20 meters, the width of the nave - 12 meters. The interior is designed in the Baroque style with Rococo elements. In 1707 the main altar was painted by Andrea Del Pozzo. On it is a wooden statue of the Mother of God, made in Grunbez in the Czech Republic in the XV century, this is the Madonna with an Ax. According to legend, she was once tried to burn by Protestants, but the fire did not harm her. Then they tried to cut her down, but the ax got stuck in Madonna's left shoulder without harming her. This statue is considered miraculous.
Side altars in the Baroque style are decorated with paintings and sculptures by Johann Georg Schmidt, Carlo Carlone, Franz Wagenschon.
In the Franciscan Church is the oldest organ in Vienna, established in 1643 by Johann Wockerl. The pediment of the church crowns the image of the Holy Trinity with three persons. At the base of the pediment - a sculpture of St. Louis IX (King of France, who was a Franciscan) and St. Clare of Assisi, patroness of the women's branch of the same order. And a sculpture of St. Jerome with a lion. In the square in front of the church - the fountain "Moses" by Johann Martin Fischer, built by him in 1798.
