The Dominican Order, with the permission of Prince Leopold VI, appeared in Vienna in 1226. By 1237 a monastery with a Romanesque chapel was built. In 1283 the church was built in the Gothic style. Most of it was dismantled during the first Turkish invasion in 1529 and went to strengthen the city walls. In 1631-1634 a new baroque church was built. Construction and decoration of the facade and dome was carried out in 1666-1674. At that time it was the second largest church in Vienna (after St. Stephen's Cathedral). In 1927, Pope Pius XI granted the church the status of a small basilica.

The construction of the temple was mainly attended by Italian masters - Carpoforo Tencalla, Cypriano Biasino, Antonio Canevale and Jacopo Spassio. The masonry was made by master Jerome Brenio. The facade design is borrowed from the Florentine church of Santa Maria Novella. Above the portal is a statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary, to which the church is dedicated.
In addition, on the facade are 8 statues of saints belonging to the Dominican Order - Elizabeth of Siena, Agnes Montepulciano, Luis Beltran, Rosa Lima, Hyacinth von Pollen, Vincent Ferrer, Albert Magnus and Thomas Aquinas.

The central nave is 46 meters long, 21 meters wide and 22 meters high. A huge fresco on the ceiling was created by Matthias Rauchmiller in the late 17th century. It contains 46 images from the life of the Virgin Mary. The modern main altar of Karl Rö sner's work with paintings by Leopold Kupelweiser dates from 1839-1840.
