Jesuit Church

Jesuitenkirche, University Church, Universitätskirche
Austria, Vienna
The Jesuit Church is located in the Inner City of Vienna. This is a Catholic church built in the Baroque style in 1623-1627. The famous Italian painter and architect Andrea Pozzo rebuilt the church between 1703 and 1707, adding towers and ceiling frescoes, and decorating the high altar. After that, the church was re-consecrated in the name of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.

The author of the luxurious and unusual decoration of the Jesuitenkirche (it is also known as the University Church) was the architect Andrea Pozzo. Interior columns made of multicolored marble, a baroque altar and ceiling paintings - all this will make the Jesuit Church one of the most beautiful churches in Vienna. By the way, pay attention to the ceiling of the temple. He's flat. But the illusion of a volumetric domed structure is so reliable that many do not believe it is just an optical effect.
