Parliament building

Hohes Haus, Reichsratsgebaude
Austria, Vienna
The parliament building is located on the Ringstrasse next to the Hofburg President's Residence. It was built in 1883 according to the design of Theophil von Hansen in neo-Greek style. Important state ceremonies are held here, the president takes the oath. And the main attraction of the building is the sculptural composition of Pallas Athena with a fountain.

Looking at the Parliament building from the Ringstrasse, the first thing that catches your eye is the impressive fountain in front. Its distinctive feature is the statue of Athena Pallas, the Greek goddess of wisdom, strategy, war and peace. In her right hand she holds Nick, the goddess of Victory, and in her left is a spear - both symbols are often associated with Athena. The allegories "Executive Power" and "Legislative Power" sit to the left and right of the statue. They emphasize the basic principle of democratic constitutions and the rule of law - the separation of powers between parliament and the executive.

The very building of the Parliament is sustained in the antique spirit as a nod to Greece - the birthplace of democracy. And in front of the Parliament there is a fountain "Athena-Pallas", which well complements the majestic building. The four figures lying at the feet of Athena are symbols of the four most important rivers of Austria: the Danube and Inn in front, the Elbe and Vltava in the back. The goddess of wisdom before the legislature is a wonderful message to all deputies sitting here!

The parliament building, like everything else in Vienna, is grandiose and monumental. It was built in the Greek style and resembles a temple. Near the parliament there are statues of horse riders, who should remind politicians of the humility of their passions. And the figures of historians, which are designed to remind of the lessons of history. I don’t know how things are going with these reminders among politicians, but Vienna resembles a small model state. By the way, excursions are conducted to the parliament and some rooms can be visited.
