Fortress Hohensalzburg is one of the oldest medieval fortresses in Europe. In 1077, the fortress was a small Romanesque castle built by Gebhard I, archbishop of Salzburg. The Hohensalzburg fortress was rebuilt and modified many times, and only the foundation remains of the original building today. Currently, the castle is open to tourists all year round. There is a museum with the history of the city, as well as a large collection of weapons from different eras.

Castle on the mountain
My friends and I were in Salzburg as part of a bus tour. We stormed the castle on foot. The men were delighted with the hall of torture and the hall of weapons, and I remember the episcopal chambers and the stove lined with tiles. And of course gorgeous views of Salzburg. The castle is not very big, we kept within 2 - 2.5 hours (inspected after a sightseeing tour) It was Sunday and the entrance to the castle was free.→

For lovers of views of the city and fortifications
The Salzburg Fortress is one of the largest medieval fortresses in Europe. Its history began in the 11th century, when the first wooden fortification appeared here. Soon stone walls appeared, and then the fortress was continuously expanded and rebuilt. How to get there and how much does it cost? Two lift options. The first one is on foot, then the entrance to the fortress will cost 8 euros. The second is to go up the funicular, then the cost of the fortress + funicular will be 11.30 euros (prices are valid for April 2015) Please note that the entrance to the funicular is from Festungsgasse street.→
