Lake of Love

Minnewater, Minnwater
Belgium, Brugge
Lake of Love is located in the southern part of the Old City. It originated in the 13th century when dams and locks were built on the River Rhea to prevent floods. There are several versions about the origin of the name. And although, according to the main one, the name comes from the word minnen (“spirit of water”), this does not prevent the lake from being a favorite place for romantic meetings.

The lake of love, the park around it, waterfowl of all kinds, silence, regularity and even some kind of relaxation that is in the air. It feels like time is slowing down here. And the lake slowly tells a long story. Once upon a time there was a girl named Minna. She loved one guy, and they were going to marry her to another. So Minna ran away from home. But she got lost in the surrounding thickets and died in the arms of her beloved, who rushed in search of the girl. Near the place where the local Juliet was buried, a lake formed.
