Fountain Charles Bules

Monument to the Mayor of Brussels, Charles Buls Fountain
Belgium, Brussel
At the end of the 19th century, the burgomaster of Brussels was Charles Buls, the son of a jeweler. He went down in history by preventing King Leopold II from destroying the historical part of the city, but on the contrary, was the initiator of the restoration of ancient buildings. Grateful Brussels people did not forget this and in 1999 they opened a monument-fountain in his honor. The monument enjoys a good reputation: students “for good luck” touch Buls’s mustache, and many townspeople and tourists touch his dog’s nose.

If, after 19 years of running the city, grateful residents erect a monument to you for their money, it means that you did not occupy the post of burgomaster for nothing! It's all about Charles Buls. Under his rule, all signs in the city became bilingual (Dutch and French), and the police became bilingual as well. The burgomaster managed to resist the grandiose architectural plans of King Leopold and defend the composition of the Grand Place and the Mount of Arts, which are now included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
