Grand Place

Grand place, Grote markt, Grand market, Market square
Belgium, Brussel
Grand Place is the central square of Brussels. It arose in the XII century on the site of dried marshes. Here are the main attractions of the capital - Town Hall and King's House. The square was badly damaged as a result of the shelling of Brussels by the French army in 1695, but was rebuilt in a few years. Every day, a flower market opens on the square, and on Sundays - a bird market. Since 1986, there has been a tradition to spread a huge carpet of flowers every two years. The Grand Place Ensemble is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Grand Place is definitely one of the most beautiful squares in Europe. I'm not lucky with the Grand Place, I can't see it in all its glory when it's empty (or maybe it's a reason to go back to Brussels again). In 2006 there was preparation for the concert, almost the whole area was occupied by chairs, in 2012 there was a preparation of a flower carpet. There was a carpet base on the square, everything was covered with a special film and people were doing something there, but it is not clear, because in the evening everything looked the same.

When earlier they showed how carpets of flowers are laid out on this square, I thought that it was huge! It turned out that it was quite small, surrounded by a carved necklace of ancient guild buildings and palaces. Many of them definitely need restoration. The place is certainly very interesting for architecture lovers. There are a sufficient number of artists with watercolors and summer cafes. And there is always something going on: a music concert, a wedding or something else. Buy for 5-6 euros a root with fresh strawberries in chocolate "Godiva" or "Leonidas" for an amateur, or a real Belgian waffle with strawberries and chocolate, and just wander around this place.

This is the central square of medieval Brussels. After the construction of the Town Hall (15th century), all workshops and guilds sought to place their representative offices here, closer to the city administration. For a long history, the malls were noisy here, holidays, fairs and knightly tournaments were held, as well as public trials and executions. Today, a flower market is based on the Grand Place, concerts and festivals are held, and every two years a 50.000 flower carpet of begonias "blooms" here.

Getting to this goodbye, it seems that time has scrolled back, and you are not in the 21st century, but in the 17th. Luxurious guild buildings around, and now your worn jeans turn into a fluffy silk skirt with a crinolim, and next to you your beloved will ring a sword and click his spurs... .
