Cathedral of Saint Bavo

Sint-Baafskathedraal, Sint-Baafs Cathedral
Belgium, Ghent
The Cathedral of St. Bavo is the main temple of the Bishopric of Ghent. The first mention of the cathedral dates back to the 10th century, but it acquired the modern look of a majestic Gothic temple only after reconstruction in the 14th-16th centuries. Here are the famous Ghent Altarpiece, four organs, as well as paintings by famous artists.

In 942, a wooden church was founded on this site, which, as a result of additions and reconstructions in the 14-16 centuries, turned into a majestic Gothic cathedral. But the interior of the temple is made in the luxurious baroque style. What to pay attention to? - Ghent altarpiece by Hubert and Jan van Eyck. For five hundred years of existence, they tried to buy it, destroy it, hide it and steal it. But again and again the altar returned home to the Cathedral of St. Bavo. A copy of the altar is on public display.
