Statue of Hagia Sophia

Monument to Hagia Sophia, Statue on Sveta Sofia
Bulgaria, Sofia
The statue of Hagia Sophia was created in 2000 by sculptor Georgy Chapkynov. It stands on the site where the monument to Lenin used to be. The monument is a bronze sculpture of Hagia Sophia weighing 5 tons. The face, arms and neck of the statue are gilded. In her right hand Sophia holds a laurel wreath - a symbol of victory, and on her left hand sits an owl - a symbol of wisdom.

There was once a monument to Lenin at this place, but in 2000 it was demolished and such a statue was placed here. Originally the statue was called "Hagia Sophia". However, according to the opinion of the people, a deep neckline, a laurel wreath and a tame owl, somehow did not go too well with the appearance of a saint. But the resourceful mayor did not lose his head and simply renamed the statue from Saint to Symbol. Now the "Symbol of Sofia" can be seen in the center, on Independence Square.
