Banya Bashi Mosque

Banya Bashi Jamiya, Banya Başı Camii, Kady Seifullah, Molla Efendi
Bulgaria, Sofia
The Banya Bashi Mosque is the only functioning mosque in Sofia. It was built by the Ottoman architect Sinan in 1567 over a natural thermal spa, from which it got its name (translated as "many baths"). The main building of the mosque is quadrangular in shape, the walls are made of stone and brick, and the walls of the prayer hall are made of hewn stone. The interior of the mosque was repeatedly reconstructed and acquired its present form in the 1920s.

The name of the mosque can be translated as "many baths". This is almost the oldest mosque in Europe. The mosque itself was built on the territory of the source. Passing by, you can see how steam rises from the ground through special outlets. This is the only working mosque in the city. Bulgarians regularly hold rallies here, demanding that the howling mullah be removed from the center of the Orthodox state. Well, they have the right : )
