Chillon Castle

Château de Chillon, Chillon Castle, Chillon Castle
Switzerland, Montreux
Chillon Castle has been both an outpost and residence of the Dukes of Savoy since its founding in the 12th century. and up to the 16th century. It was built as a fortress on a small rock near the shore of Lake Geneva to protect trade routes between northern and southern Europe. At the end of the XVI century. the castle lost its strategic importance and was turned into a prison. The castle consists of 25 buildings and three courtyards protected by two round walls. In the center of the complex rises a 25-meter main tower, other watchtowers are located in a circle. Each room of the fortress reveals its own part of the history of the castle: here are pompous reception halls for celebrations with giant fireplaces and painted ceilings, and a complex of living rooms for princes and counts, and many utility and prison rooms in the basements. Worthy of attention are the Chapel with a painting of the 14th century, the Celebration Hall with an exposition of weapons and armor, the Knights' and Armorial Halls. Since the beginning of the XIX century. The castle houses a museum to this day. From the top of the tallest tower you can enjoy a beautiful view of Lake Geneva and the Alps.

If you are traveling to Switzerland, then it is unacceptable not to look at this castle. The ticket to the castle is inexpensive, it's worth it. It is located very beautifully - in the lake on the island and connected to the shore by a bridge. The lake itself delights, and the views of the French coast are super! It is quite compact with narrow passages and stairs, winding up a romantic mood. But the castle retained the rigidity of the prison history. I was very happy with my visit to the castle.

Chillon Castle was supposedly founded in the 9th century, but according to excavations, there was still a Roman settlement here. The mention of the castle as the estate of the Dukes of Savoy appeared for the first time in 1160. Until the 15th century, the building was strengthened and expanded, which determined its modern appearance. The castle was intended to control the path along the St. Bernard Pass. The road that connects Northern Europe with Italy still passes nearby. For a long time the castle served as a prison, this fact is described by Byron in the poem "Prisoner of Chillon".
