The Montenvieux mountain railway with a third cog rail was opened in 1909. The train from Chamonix rises to a height of 1913 meters to the Montenvers station, located directly above the largest glacier in France, the Mer de Glace. You can get to the glacier from the train by a short cable car or on your own in 20-30 minutes. In the glacier itself, there is an Ice Grotto with a small Ice Museum in the winter season.
