Basilica of St. George (Jiri) - the second largest church in Prague Castle. At the beginning of the XIII century to the south side of the tower was added the chapel of St. Ludmila. The southern portal of the basilica (from Irzhskaya Street) is decorated with a relief depicting St. Rust, who fights a dragon (author Benedict Reed).
The western faç ade of the basilica acquired a modern look during the Baroque period as a result of the reconstruction made by Francesco Caratti (in 1671) and Františ ek Maximilian Kanka (in 1718-1722). Sculptures on the facade depict Prince Wroclaw and Abbess Mlad.
The basilica is a three-nave volume with Romanesque connecting windows and a crypt under a raised presbytery. The abbess of the monastery was buried in the crypt dating back to the XII century. Prince Vratislav, its founder, was buried in the basilica (the burial place is marked by a stone sarcophagus with a painted addition), as well as several princes of the Przemyslovic family.
Remains of Romanesque paintings have been preserved on the walls of the choir. In the southern wall of the basilica is the chapel of St. Ludmila. The tombstone was commissioned by Charles IV, although the body of the saint was transported to the basilica in 925.
