Church of the Virgin Mary of the Snow

One of the highest temples in Prague, located in the city center, on Jungman Square. The Church of Our Lady of the Snows was founded in the middle of the 14th century by the Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV. Over the centuries, it has been completed and restored more than once. Initially, the church was owned by the Carmelites, but at the beginning of the 17th century the religious building was taken over by the Franciscans. The huge height of the vaults contrasts with the small length of the room, which is explained by the original construction plan - the current view is only a small part of what was planned. Within the walls of the church there is a grandiose early baroque altar 29 meters high, covered with gilding and decorated with polychrome painting. On the south side of the Church of the Virgin Mary of the Snow, the monastery of the Franciscan order adjoins.

Church and monastery of the Holy Virgin Mary of the Snows

The Church and Monastery of the Virgin Mary of the Snows is one of the largest medieval buildings in Prague's New Town. By founding the church and monastery, the Czech king (and later the emperor of the Holy Roman Empire) Charles IV wanted to emphasize the proximity of this building to Rome. This is evidenced by the name of the complex, which connects it with the famous Roman basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore (Santa Maria Maggiore).
